Hello Esteemed Researcher,

Nice to meet you. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Microbiologist III for a contract position working with the CDC in the Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD). CORVD aims to improve the health of people and communities by preventing illness, disability, and death from respiratory viruses through public health science and practice.

The successful candidate holds a PhD in Molecular Biology, Virology, Microbiology, or a related field, WITH a Master’s in Virology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology. Possess a proven track record of at least 3-5 years in lab management, applied next-generation sequencing, project leadership, and research completion. Expertise in designing lab protocols for CLIA management, automated PCR lab systems, human respiratory disease surveillance, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and a strong aptitude for leadership and self-driven project execution are essential for this role.

This position is specifically designed and new for an individual who has experience and passion in the Entire Research Lab Development and Management Cycle.

This role is critical and focused on participating in CORVD’s respiratory viruses laboratory research, including detection, characterization, and molecular epidemiology of human respiratory virus from outbreaks or sporadic cases of respiratory diseases with

Responsibilities:

Lab Research, Management, and Oversight:

Integration of lab management and scientific research and experimentation capabilities.

Collaborate with a growing team of virologists, bioinformaticians, informaticians, and epidemiologists.

Conduct independent laboratory research which will result in the development and application of advanced molecular techniques and high through sequencing analysis which will detect and characterize both known and novel emerging viruses Lead and manage daily laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.

Implement rigorous research methodologies and techniques, maintaining accurate records.

Calibrate and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to independently perform tests, analyses and other procedures in conducting experiments and studies.

Perform activities associated with lab safety, specimen, and laboratory quality management system (QMS).

Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS):

Utilize a minimum of three years' hands-on experience in applied next-generation sequencing techniques to drive and complete cutting-edge research initiatives.

Collaborate closely with bioinformaticians to provide data analysis to sequencing data generated from sequencing including Sanger sequencing, metagenomic sequencing and high through targeted genomic sequencing.

Develop and optimize NGS protocols, ensuring robust and reproducible results.

Project and Data Leadership:

Manage research projects from inception to completion, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills and project management expertise.

Foster effective communication and knowledge exchange.

Lab Protocol Design and Automation:

Contribute to designing new protocols, including analysis of scientific literature and protocols, testing new reagents and assays to develop and validate a suite of advanced molecular methods to provide comprehensive, pan-viral detection and genome sequencing capability.

Design and refine lab protocols tailored for CLIA management, emphasizing precision, efficiency, and compliance.

Leverage experience in automated PCR lab systems to enhance research capabilities.

Human Respiratory Disease Surveillance:

Perform various molecular techniques to rapidly identify and characterize viral agents in support of outbreak investigation of both known and unknown viral etiology, human disease surveillance and etiology study, and zoonotic emerging disease surveillance study.

Spearhead human respiratory disease surveillance efforts, including sample collection, processing, analysis, and reporting.

Apply insights from surveillance data to inform research directions and contribute to public health understanding.

Communication and Collaboration:

Communicate scientific findings, project updates, and research outcomes coherently to both internal and external stakeholders.

Prepare and deliver written and oral reports to a variety of individuals and groups in both informal and formal settings.

Prepare results for publication in a variety of journals.

Provide training for new fellows and guest researchers, as needed.

Foster collaboration and cross-disciplinary engagement to enrich research initiatives.

Leadership and Self-Driven Execution:

Exhibit proactive leadership skills and self-driven initiative to manage projects effectively, meeting objectives within deadlines.

Demonstrate adaptability and agility in response to evolving project priorities.

Qualifications and Must Haves:

Education: PhD in Molecular Biology, Virology, Microbiology, or a related field. With a Master’s in Virology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology.

Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of post-graduate and combined experience in lab management, applied next-generation sequencing, project management, and research completion.

Technical Expertise: Profound knowledge of next-generation sequencing techniques, lab protocol design, automated PCR lab systems, and human respiratory disease surveillance.

Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams, projects, and resources effectively.

Communication: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for successful collaboration and comprehensive oral and written reporting.

CLIA Protocol Design: Proven expertise in designing lab protocols for CLIA management.

Project Management: Track record of successfully leading and completing research projects on time and with high accuracy.

Adaptability: Capable of adapting quickly to shifting research priorities and delivering results in a dynamic environment.

Location: Live within proximity of or live in Atlanta, GA as this position requires on-site presence.
